A Midland Metro conductor has been awarded 'Student employee of the year' by Wolverhampton University for his dedication to working while studying.

22 year old Graeme Gorthy, from Wednesbury works part time at the Midland Metro, studies accountancy part time and is also expecting his first child - so he's always on the move.

Graeme was nominated for the award by Metro Operations Manager Paul Barefoot, and now qualifies for the national award in July.

He said: "It can be a challenge balancing work and study but I'm committed to becoming an accountant and completing my degree. I work part time as a conductor for the Metro and they've always been very supportive of my study. I'm over the moon with this award and am looking forward to the national final."

Graeme received his award at a ceremony organised by Wolverhampton University earlier this month. More than 140 people attended the awards to recognise the achievements of students throughout the year.

Paul Barefoot, Operations Manager for Midland Metro, said: "We're extremely proud of Graeme for his commitment to working while studying. We wish him all the best for the national finals."

The Midland Metro is operated by National Express and runs between Birmingham Snow Hill and Wolverhampton every 8 minutes throughout the day. It is one of the region's most reliable forms of public transport, delivering over 99% of its service on time in 2010 to date.
